Overview

Calchaenesthes

*Calchaenesthes* Kraatz, 1863 is a small Mediterranean genus of longhorn beetles whose members are intimately associated with cypresses and junipers throughout southern Europe, North Africa, and Turkey. Adults are active from May to August, when they can be found on fresh dead wood or beneath the bark of their host trees, occasionally visiting flowers for pollen or sap. The five Palaearctic species (four occurring in Europe) show considerable variation in coloration and patterning, making them among the more visually diverse of their tribe. Their strong flight ability and univoltine to semivoltine life history reflect adaptation to the patchy, often arid habitats where Cupressaceae dominate.
