Overview

Nathrius

*Nathrius brevipennis* is among the smallest European longhorn beetles, reaching barely 3–6 mm, yet its impact outweighs its size. Native to the Mediterranean basin, this monotypic genus has spread worldwide as an inadvertent stowaway in grapevine cuttings, dried wicker, and cane basketry. In Central Europe it develops exclusively in unstripped willow rods and woven baskets, where successive generations can reduce the stems to a crumbling lattice of galleries over several years. Adults are active from May to August and are attracted to dead wood and UV light.
