Overview

Callipogon

*Callipogon* [auct., verify] harbours one of the most extraordinary longhorn beetles of the Palaearctic — *C. relictus*, a Tertiary relict surviving in old-growth forests of the Russian Far East. At 30–65 mm, it ranks among the largest cerambycids in the region. Adults are nocturnal and associated exclusively with ancient, dying or dead broadleaved trees, particularly oak, elm and ash. Its extreme rarity and relict status have earned it full protection under the Red Book of Russia and IUCN Vulnerable listing.
