Overview

Dorysthenes

*Dorysthenes* Vigors, 1826 is among the most impressive of the Prioninae, comprising large to very large beetles (20–50 mm) with a robust, somewhat flattened body of brown to dark coloration. Males are particularly striking, bearing exceptionally enlarged mandibles that distinguish them at a glance from most other West Palaearctic longhorns. Adults are strongly nocturnal and capable fliers, frequently attracted to ultraviolet light on warm summer nights. The genus reaches the western Palaearctic only marginally, with a single species recorded from southern China.
