*Phymatodes* Mulsant, 1839 is a medium-sized longhorn genus (8–18 mm) whose members are among the most colourfully variable cerambycids of the West Palaearctic, ranging from pale testaceous through chestnut-brown to deep metallic blue in the subgenus *Poecilium*. Adults are active from April to July, most commonly encountered on freshly dead or recently felled broadleaved trees and on stored unbarked timber, where they can reinfest bark-bearing logs for several successive years. *Phymatodes testaceus* is a familiar species of oak woodland across Europe, while *P.* (*Poecilium*) *alni* is associated with alder.
