*Plagionotus* Mulsant, 1842 is a medium-sized longhorn beetle (10–22 mm) of deciduous woodlands and old orchards across the West Palaearctic, instantly recognisable by its striking yellow oblique fasciae on a dark ground — one of the most convincing wasp mimics among European cerambycids. Adults are strongly diurnal, running actively over sun-exposed trunks and freshly cut timber from May to August. The flagship species, *P. detritus*, breeds chiefly in *Quercus* but also colonises a range of other broadleaved trees and shrubs, attacking dying and freshly felled wood from slender branches (≥2 cm) to massive trunks exceeding 100 cm diameter.
