Overview

Schurmannia

*Schurmannia* [auct., verify] is a small, monotypic genus of the subfamily Spondylidinae, housing a single species associated with coniferous forests in China. Adults are dark brown to black, cylindrical in form, and measure 5–10 mm in length, blending inconspicuously against the bark of dead or dying pines and their allies. Nocturnal in habit, adults are attracted to the scent of conifer bark and smoke, and fly between May and August across elevations from lowland to around 2000 m. Larvae develop deep within the sapwood of Pinaceae, completing their cycle over two to four years.
